Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice plan

All children have rights, no matter who they are, where they live, what their parents do, what language they speak, what their religion is, what their gender is, what their culture is, whether they have a disability, whether they are rich or poor. No child should be treated unfairly on any basis.

Historically, in The United States, the richness of diversity among the population has not always been valued; similarly, differences have not been equally cherished. As a result, The United States has not always shown due regard for the diverse needs of all people. Research has also shown that, in early childhood care and education, we have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference to children’s lives through addressing diversity, equality and inclusion. With these Guidelines, we aim to orient practices and understanding at Maplewood Outside School (MOS).

In order to be inclusive, MOS must be aware of and interested in children’s capabilities, interests, culture, language and background. Informed by this knowledge, teachers can create a respectful climate, and build the curriculum and interactions to proactively promote principles of equality and inclusion in their time together. Respect for diversity and equality at MOS is about validating and cherishing each child and, in so doing, helping to build a society which truly nurtures all of its children.

At Maplewood Outside School (MOS) we will strive to:

Respect all children equally, nurturing each child’s cultural identity and sense of belonging.

Acknowledge that parents are the primary educators and experts on their child, and support the smooth transitioning from home to MOS.

MOS will implement a curriculum that reflects the identities of all children and recognizes their abilities and interests.

Ensure that service planning and provision embraces the needs of all children and works to deliver an inclusive and accessible environment for all.

Enable all children to meaningfully participate in all aspects of the curriculum, and extend learning to challenge and promote the individual child’s abilities and development.

Ensure that children of all abilities have equal access to culturally and developmentally appropriate play-based educational activities,  which develop their understanding, dispositions, skills and holistic development.

Support children to celebrate diversity and feel comfortable with difference.

Support children to enjoy their time at MOS in an environment free from bias, stereotypes and discrimination.

Empower children to stand up for themselves and others in difficult situations.

Guarantee the safety and well-being of all children as central to every aspect of children’s learning, well-being, welfare and development.
